Educating Ethnic Girls

BURN, LINDA

Project's country: Vietnam

Project type: Supporting Children

Brief description

Educating Ethnic Girls is important to us at CEF as the ethnic girls come from very challenging situations and need a lot of support to complete high school and receive tertiary education.

‘Why:

~They rarely have parents who encourage them to be educated.

~Without an education their chances of breaking the poverty cycle are small to non-existent.

~Most of them spend more time helping at home and with farming.

~Their parents rarely have attended more than a few years of schooling, so they can't help them with their education.

~They often start school later than the Kinh, non-ethnic girls, putting them behind.

~Their families can't afford extra tuition which the Kinh, non-ethnic families often can.

~Being in school helps them avoid unhealthy traditions such as early marriage and childbearing. being betrothed when infants and expected to move in with their husbands once they reach puberty.

~Without educational encouragement and support, they easily drop out of school. CEF Vietnam and their school can provide this support.

~Educating ethnic girls is inspiring for the other girls in their communities.

~Being educated is empowering.

~Being educated enables positive change in their lives and that of their families and in their communities. ~Being educated brings about long-term sustainable change to their lives.

~Breaking the poverty cycle is so important for these girls, as the lives of most of their families are tough and sad, resulting in a high level of alcoholism.
